How Does Calmare® Therapy Work?

Calmare is an FDA-cleared device proven to reduce pain in 80% of patients in clinical trials. It's non-invasive and drug-free, so you have none of the side effects of opioid drugs and other drugs often prescribed for pain.

The Calmare® device uses a biophysical rather than a biochemical approach. A 'no-pain' message is transmitted to the nerve via disposable surface electrodes applied to the skin in the region of the patient's pain. The perception of pain is cancelled when the no-pain message replaces that of pain, by using the same pathway through the surface electrodes in a non-invasive way. Regardless of pain intensity, a patient's pain can be completely removed for immediate relief.

Maximum benefit is achieved through follow-up treatments. The patient may be able to go for extended periods of time between subsequent treatments while experiencing significant pain control and relief. The period of time between treatments depends on the underlying cause and severity of the pain in addition to other factors.

Calmare® Therapy FAQ's

What are the side effects of Calmare® therapy?

Calmare Therapy® (scrambler therapy) is an FDA-cleared alternative pain management therapy. It can decrease the need for medication and treat chronic pain. It is non-invasive, drug-free, and has no known side effects.

Does Calmare® therapy work?

Calmare Scrambler Therapy® provides corrective bioelectric code information through the peripheral nerves, into the spinal cord and central nervous system. These new artificial “non-pain” codes reprogram the brain to read a “non-pain” code as real and generated from self, thereby shutting off the old chronic pain signals. Over the course of 10 (35-45 minute) treatment sessions, through neural plasticity the brain is Rebooted (remodeled) and the chronic pain signal is turned off.

How effective is Calmare Scrambler therapy®?

Many patient-specific factors determine how quickly pain relief will begin. Most patients experience a significant reduction or total absence of their pain during the first treatment session. The pain relief may last a few hours or more after the first treatment session. Based on numerous clinical and research studies (Please see: Research Studies section), Calmare Scrambler Therapy® is effective in over 80% of patients treated for neuropathic pain.

Are there reasons why someone cannot have Calmare Scrambler Therapy®?

Yes. Caution is also taken with patients with implanted devices such as pacemakers, defibrillators, spinal cord stimulators or deep brain stimulators. Patients treated with Ketamine within the last 12 months may not experience relief from Calmare Scrambler Therapy®. Additionally, Calmare Scrambler Therapy® may not be as effective in patients taking medications that blunt nerve transmission such as antiseizure medications to treat seizures, and antiepileptic drugs (such as Neurontin or Lyrica, for example) used to treat neuropathic pain. Provided you do not have a history of seizures, we are happy to work with your physicians to have you gradually wean off anti-seizure pain medicines such as Neurontin or Lyrica to maximize your response to Calmare Scrambler Therapy®.

Is Calmare Scrambler Therapy painful? What does it feel like?

No, it is not painful. During treatments, the stimulation is often described as a “buzzing," or “tapping”, or sometimes as a “tingling” sensation. As the treatment proceeds with modulation and fine-tuning of the transmitted signals, these sensations are often replaced by feelings that vary and are often described as a “pleasant feeling”.
